While Intersectionalty is mainly about women's oppressions/discriminations, it would also be interesting to see intersectionality be applied to men, which might be something that I could look at for my project further down the road.
Intersectionality - Women and Men
Hybridity - could challenge categorization, patriarchy
Could reverse the roles of Kiel and Apple. Keep them as they are but gender-reverse them.
Could challenge myself by doing this; the two characters were made to be those genders but reversing them could be interesting...
Kyle could have curly hair (still red) - merida (refernece) short curly hair, round face - african american? - loish - little rebel, acts tough but is cute
Art style/theme could be like the french revolution - red being a primary colour - importance of Kyle - clothing could be similar to that time too (big city, poverty) (Les Miserables Film)
Apple - short straight hair - maybe not even in the story! - could be that Kyle don't need no man

Thesis Statement:
Intersectionality has
become a fairly new topic in nowadays feminsim theory discussions. I
want to explore what intersectionality is and how to apply it to my

I want
to make an interactive comic that explores intersectionality through
character aesthetics.
My
main theory I will be using for my Capstone Project is
“Intersectionality”.
I will
apply intersectionality to my capstone project through character
aesthetics.
I am
going to explore the Fantasy genre as well as the History of “Elves”.
Throughout
the many fantasy stories, the mythical creatures have always stuck to
the same look. Many fantasy games/movies represent the Elves as noble
and WHITE.
I want
to challenge this by having more diverse fantasy characters,
particulary elves.
I am
thinking about making the Elves “Arabic” influenced. (Sinbad)
I also
want to explore the aesthetics of mythical creatures/Elves. How did
the fantasy genre come to be? I thought about exploring the Greek
mythology, and how the mythical creatures have changed over the years
and what used to be considered beautiful and how that has changed
over the years.
Does
it make sense with your world/story?
Orientalisim
avoid
western perspective on arabic
decent
explantation of intersectionality

you are making and how
why
interactive comic why is it suitable for this discussion
how
does the theory help address this stuff
why
chose comic/2D
address

Capstone Project
What is my thing? What am I making?
An interactive comic that explores intersectionality through character aesthetics.
I have had the idea to make a comic since 2010 (?), which I had worked on over the years. I had stopped working on it when I thought it was "perfect". I want to re-explore my idea and look at what I wanted to say through my comic.
Looking back at it now, I realize that I wanted to tackle stereotypes, racism and sexism. The story was meh, because my main focus was on the characters.
I want to work on the story more and re-imagine the characters through intersectionality as that covers all of those issues I wanted to tackle.
I think doing it through character aesthetics is the most efficient way, because

Kiel Project and Masculinity in Disney Animation
Kiel Project
I worked on my story more yesterday, changing things around to make more sense.
I had the idea that there used to be the "Asilor" tribe (Elfs) who lived peacefully near the ocean. (Tropical). One day, the Fantonia tribe (also Elfs) wanted to take over their land. The Asilor refused and Fantonia forcefully took over their land, creating a war. The Asilor eventually lost, and were used as slaves (?). The Asilor are albinos and were seen as the "weaker" race. One of the Fantonia elfs falls in love with one of the Asilor elfs, in secret they would meet up. The Fantonia elf helped them to an uprising, the Asilor rebelled against the Fantonians. There is a big battle, and the Asilor decide to flee, the Asilor elf that had a thing with the Fantonian Elf had a baby and gives it to the Fantonian elf, before she flees.
The King wants to wipe out the Asilor race, and hunts them down until they go extinct.
The Fantonian elf takes care of the baby in secret, not wanting to let the King of Fantonia know that the child is a hybrid. After a few years, the King eventually finds out that the Fantonian Elf had a thing with the Asilor lady (from interrogation). The Fantonian elf is warned by this by one of his friends. The father tells his son to run/hide. Kiel (the hybrid son) flees and is forced to look out for himself on the streets. The next day, Kiel finds his Dad being executed and has to helplessly watch.
Kiel lives alone in the streets, stealing food and looking out for himself. One day he sees a girl stealing as well, they become friends and Kiel finally finds someone he could trust again. The girl always dreams of having a family, and one day a family take her in.
Kiel sees her being "adopted" but they both decide to still meet up at their secret place. Kiel goes to their secret spot to find that the girl never shows up. Kiel is alone again.
Kiel got bullied by other street kids because he looked "different". (slightly Asilor and slightly Fantonian) - maybe apple helpd him dye his hair to fit in (?) - Apple is not afraid of him
As Kiel wanders the street by himself he sees a woman painting, curious he watches her. She eventually gives the painting to her costumer who pays her a lot of money. Kiel thinks he can finally make some kind of money if he gives this a go.
He starts drawing/painting and becomes lost in his own world. (as the real world was really kinda sad) He keeps drawing a woman over and over again. She looks nothing like everyone else (albino), and he is convinced that she exists somewhere out there (beyond Fantonia).
Fantonia has walls surrounding it so that no-one can go out or in. (really tall buildings (Aladdin inspired). Kinda claustrophobic.
As Kiel grows up he sells his paintings at the night market in Fantonia. One day the King of Fantonia travels through the market. He glances over to Kiel to see him sketching the woman. The King knows about the Asilors and starts asking Kiel who she is. Kiel being caught off guard replies that he doesn't know her and wants to one day travel to find her. The king getting suspicious asks Kiel for his name. Kiel catches on and remembers his father telling him to always keep away from the guards and the King. Kiel makes up a name which makes the King even more suspicious of him, the King is about to tell his guards to arrest him, but Kiel is already on the run. The guards chase him, and he turns into a corner to catch his breath when he sees someone else also hiding with him. They both just nod and decide to escape together.
-This is how far I got-
The girl that Kiel was friends with when they were young got a adopted by a wealthy family. (Fantonia has a big separation between the rich and the poor, they live in different parts of Fantonia (?)) She is taken with them to a different part of Fantonia. She wants to meet up with Kiel but the family have set ideals for what a "woman" should be. She is forced to stay inside and do the housework, while the foster father and son play outside and work outside. As years go by, she eventually finds a way to escape the house (when everyone is gone, the family trust her enough to leave her by herself). She goes back to the meeting place but Kiel never shows up (he has moved on). She finds a hole in the wall to the "outside". She starts going outside more and more and exploring the wilderness, teaching herself to hunt. (the family would sometimes be gone for days, so the girl would leave to go outside).
One day, the family eventually find out about her sneaking out and confront her, locking her in her room to teach her a lesson. She breaks the window, leaving a note and escapes to the outside, never to return.
-she later meets up with Roy and Kiel in the story-
During the time the Asilor were "slaves" (?) - still not sure about his part - maybe more like how america and american Indian live together (?) or Australia and the aboriginals (?) NZ and maori (?)
Some of the Fantonians helped the Asilor and helped them start a rebellion against the higher forces (King). There were posters/propaganda about Asilor (?)
I was also thinking about creating different races (as my characters look quite generic).
Fantonia - arab-inspired. "eastern" (making them look "exotic"
Asilor - very similar to the Fantonia, very pale and white hair (Albino)
Vampires - korean (?) china (white is "pure")
What am I trying to say/show?
What am I asking?
feminism - gender and racism
intersectional feminism -Kimberle Crenshaw
This is pretty crazy:
Crenshaw often refers to the case DeGraffenreid v. General Motors in writing, interviews, and lectures. In DeGraffenreid v. General Motors, a group of African American women argued they were receiving compound discrimination excluding them from employment opportunity. They contended that although women were eligible for office and secretarial jobs, in practice such positions only were offered to white women, barring African American women from seeking employment in the company. The courts weighed the allegations of race and gender discrimination separately, finding that the employment of African American male factory workers disproved racial discrimination, and the employment of white female office workers disproved gender discrimination. The court declined to consider compound discrimination, and dismissed the case
Masculinity in Disney Animation
The Hays Code - "No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin."- it was created because of the many social, political and cultural changes in the US in the 1960s and 1970s.
The things we considered moral and immoral in the 1930s are still upholding in American Cinema. (even though our morals might have changed since then)
"The Production Code became the industry's guarantee that it manufactured 'pure' entertainment..." - lots of people were in favor of the code

Formative
Kiel Project
I need to establish the world of Fantonia so I can figure out how Kiel fits in it.
Zak suggested making the different tribes counrties. Perhaps Kiel's tribe is America, it would be cool to look at the history of America and what is happening with it now.
Countries stealing resources from other countries. The people don't really get a say in it. The big gap between rich and poor. How much we value money.
Relate it to Mr. Robot? - Good things can't exist without compromise (to get cheap clothes, they are made by children who are underpaid)
The issues of power - who has the power?
World Building - use examples from the real world (Game of Thrones)
Does my world work like our world? Why are the tribes at war?
General understanding of my universe - how does Kiel fit into it?
Different tribes = different countries?
Propaganda posters - poster about Vampires, warning
Book - No Dogs, No Blacks, No Irish

Research for Formative
Representation in Film
I'm thinking about exploring how women and men are portrayed in animated films (looking at stereotypes).
Articles that look interesting:
Postwar Princesses, Young Apprentices, and a Little Fish-Girl: Reading Subjectivities in Hayao Miyazaki's Tales of Fantasy
Shannon Brownlee - Masculinity Between Animation and Live Action, or, Spongebob v. Hasselhoff
Lynne Perras - "Steadier, happier, and quicker at the work"? Women in Canadian Animation
Maybe?
Refusing the Stereotype
Gender Role Portrayal and the Disney Princesses
The Empowering (Super) Heroine?

Article:
History of disney princesses and princes, and how the disney film titles had to be either gender neutral or masculine because men/boys didn't want to watch a movie that was girlie.
Lots of merchandise from disney movies mainly meant for girls (the princess dolls) but not for boys. Even powerpuff girls' merchandise was meant for girls, not boys.

Capstone Project Idea
Kiel Project
I was thinking about doing my Kiel project that I have been working on a few years for my capstone project. I still need to work on the story as I haven't really touched it since I started Animation College. I also need to work on my character designs and overall design for the world.
I am thinking about doing representation for my Kiel project as I have realized that throughout my story I have always tried to stir away from stereotypes (in design and personality of the characters). I have always wanted to design the mythical creatures in a way that they haven't been done before. (breaking the traditional LOTR look) So I think I will use that as my research topic! :)
I was thinking about either doing a small episode/clip of the story (as the story is very big) or doing a trailer for perhaps a Kickstarter...
I am leaning towards doing an animated clip as it will show more character interaction as representation is my research topic.

My Body of Work
Presentation - My body of Work
1. Shape Language
I want to create interesting characters through my art. Expressing a strong presence of personality and attitude in the poses and expression in the characters. How shapes in characters can make us feel, e.g.
Lucifire: When I created this character I thought a lot about the shape language, roundness of character makes her appear soft, but the sharp eyes and horns make her look villainous.
Demetrius: Making him look heroic through bug chest, but more villainous through spiky hair and eyes. Demetrius was Zebra inspired - using the eyes to express this.
2. Learning from Life
How the body works, expressing form through dynamic shapes. Using color to suggest folds/skin. Using shading and lighting to show shape. Adding what I learnt from real life and applying it to my own style.
3. Dynamic Poses/Movement
A common theme in my work is the sense of movement. My 2011 has a lot less depth than the 2015 drawing. How shapes can create 3D space
My growth from 2011 to 2015, shy to more confident
4. Color
I'm still learning a lot about this. My drawing in 2013 is quite flat with its use of color, the shading is just darker colors of the skin color. In 2015 I experimented with the use of more red color in the cheeks and nose to make the character look more alive. Using different darker colors to add shadow. The use of red for skin blew my mind
5. Finding My style
I had a huge trouble finding my style in 2015, before I met Gino I always drew cartoony. I was always very inspired by Loish and how her style is realistic but also cartoony, but I never thought I could achieve this. Through Gino I discovered more realistic styles and tried them out, I started drawing more realism and enjoyed Life Drawing way more. However I had huge trouble adding what I had learnt to my own style, it was like the realism was a separate style to my own. In 2016 (now) I'm slowly finding a way to put the two styles together.
6. Inspiration
Jubilations - (artist on deviantart) has always been a huge inspiration to me (from the very beginning!). Her art is full of movement and personality. Her work is just fun to look at and the poses and expressions say a lot about the characters.
Tracyjib - (Lackadaisy) has been a huge inspiration to me, her use of shading and mood in her comic inspire me. She mostly only used Sepia in her work, but her use of shading and lighting make them look like they're in colour.
Loish - (more recent) her coloring/shading is beautiful and stylistic. Her characters are also super unique, she experiments with different colors and make them work together
Leppu - Her comic is so interesting, her storytelling is very unique, characters have a lot of depth, exploring interesting themes in her comic - one character is very held back/neat and the other is very outgoing and reckless
Sash-Kash - her pieces seem to tell stories, and she always uses a lot of symbols in her work. The pieces always seem to have metaphorical meanings behind them, fanart of movies - her art would express what the movie was about, using symbols to show this
