My Body of Work

Presentation - My body of Work

1. Shape Language
I want to create interesting characters through my art. Expressing a strong presence of personality and attitude in the poses and expression in the characters. How shapes in characters can make us feel, e.g.
Lucifire: When I created this character I thought a lot about the shape language, roundness of character makes her appear soft, but the sharp eyes and horns make her look villainous.
Demetrius: Making him look heroic through bug chest, but more villainous through spiky hair and eyes. Demetrius was Zebra inspired - using the eyes to express this.

2. Learning from Life
How the body works, expressing form through dynamic shapes. Using color to suggest folds/skin. Using shading and lighting to show shape. Adding what I learnt from real life and applying it to my own style.

3. Dynamic Poses/Movement
A common theme in my work is the sense of movement. My 2011 has a lot less depth than the 2015 drawing. How shapes can create 3D space
My growth from 2011 to 2015, shy to more confident

4. Color
I'm still learning a lot about this. My drawing in 2013 is quite flat with its use of color, the shading is just darker colors of the skin color. In 2015 I experimented with the use of more red color in the cheeks and nose to make the character look more alive. Using different darker colors to add shadow. The use of red for skin blew my mind

5. Finding My style
I had a huge trouble finding my style in 2015, before I met Gino I always drew cartoony. I was always very inspired by Loish and how her style is realistic but also cartoony, but I never thought I could achieve this. Through Gino I discovered more realistic styles and tried them out, I started drawing more realism and enjoyed Life Drawing way more. However I had huge trouble adding what I had learnt to my own style, it was like the realism was a separate style to my own. In 2016 (now) I'm slowly finding a way to put the two styles together.

6. Inspiration
Jubilations - (artist on deviantart) has always been a huge inspiration to me (from the very beginning!). Her art is full of movement and personality. Her work is just fun to look at and the poses and expressions say a lot about the characters.
Tracyjib - (Lackadaisy) has been a huge inspiration to me, her use of shading and mood in her comic inspire me. She mostly only used Sepia in her work, but her use of shading and lighting make them look like they're in colour.
Loish - (more recent) her coloring/shading is beautiful and stylistic. Her characters are also super unique, she experiments with different colors and make them work together
Leppu - Her comic is so interesting, her storytelling is very unique, characters have a lot of depth, exploring interesting themes in her comic - one character is very held back/neat and the other is very outgoing and reckless
Sash-Kash - her pieces seem to tell stories, and she always uses a lot of symbols in her work. The pieces always seem to have metaphorical meanings behind them, fanart of movies - her art would express what the movie was about, using symbols to show this
